REAPER 7 JS polarity / phase rotate vs PHIXER continuous stereo phase for mono-safe bass
REAPER 7 still gives you JS polarity invert, phase rotate / JS phase tools, and an honest null test before render. That is the stock first pass. Continuous stereo phase is a different job: leftover L/R fights that still cancel by band after polarity, timing, and null-test hygiene. This page is the REAPER 7 comparison. The broader REAPER map is null test + phase align then PHIXER. Cousin DAW angles: Logic Pro AU Gain polarity and Ableton Live 12 Utility phase. Null-test cousin: stereo null test / correlation check.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. It is not a replacement for JS polarity, take polarity invert, or an honest null test. Polarity and timing first.
What REAPER 7 already does
JS / take polarity invert
A 180° flip on one path or take. First fix for dual-mic, DI+amp, or a parallel bus that fights the dry path. If body returns immediately, stop. You do not need spectral rotation.
JS phase rotate / delay nudge
REAPER JS and item/take delay can fix timing fights. Use them before any continuous rotator. Correlation meters can look safe while mono fold still thins Mid. Headphones still lie.
Honest null test + mono fold
Invert one copy against another and listen for residual. Fold master to mono before render. That is the REAPER mono-check. Broader habits: REAPER null test + phase align and PHIXER null-test workflow.
Where stock JS polarity / phase rotate stops
- Cancel is band-specific. Lows gone, mids still wide. A single 180° flip is too blunt. Null may look almost quiet while mono fold still hollows bass.
- The part must stay stereo. A stereo sample, bus print, or reverb return that you cannot collapse to mono without losing the image.
- Polarity + delay already tried. Invert and JS phase rotate did not restore body. Residual L/R spectral fight remains.
Logic Pro and Ableton Live 12 users hit the same leftover after Gain Invert / Utility Phase Invert: Logic AU 2025 · Live 12.
REAPER 7 decision table
| You notice… | First try (stock) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Body returns when you invert polarity on one path | Keep the invert. Done. | Do not reach for PHIXER. |
| Null almost quiet, mono fold still thins | Trust mono fold over meters | Re-check master mono before render. |
| Stereo bass still hollows by band after invert + JS phase rotate | Null-test honesty | PHIXER Amount / From / To on that stereo bed. |
| Widener / Haas huge in cans | Bypass the widener | Mono fold honesty. Not a repair job. |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R phase job. |
REAPER 7 habit (about 90 seconds)
- Master mono fold or honest null. Note what disappears (kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest).
- On dual paths: invert polarity on one side. Re-check mono / null.
- If timing is the problem, JS phase rotate or take delay nudge. Re-check.
- If a stereo bed still cancels by band, audition PHIXER. A/B with the plugin bypassed, still in mono.
When PHIXER helps in REAPER 7
- The clip or bus is already stereo and must stay stereo.
- Polarity invert, JS phase rotate / delay, and null-test hygiene are cleaned up.
- You can hear clearer mono body with PHIXER engaged and the image still usable in stereo.
- You are not using it to replace JS polarity or to "fix" Haas / widener width.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-folded or null-tested yet.
- Polarity invert or JS phase rotate already restored the fold.
- You want PHIXER as a widener or a polarity clone. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
Quick path: REAPER mono fold / null → polarity invert on dual paths → JS phase rotate / delay nudge → PHIXER only for leftover continuous L/R fights → mono fold again before render.
